Paying Privately

A boutique, higher-touch model of psychotherapy care.

Private-pay care allows the work to be structured around clinical depth, continuity, and the fluid nature of therapy rather than the narrower frame of what a health insurance plan defines as a covered service.

What is different

More room, more continuity, more integration.

This is still psychotherapy, not crisis coverage or unlimited access. The difference is that the structure can be more spacious and responsive when care is paid directly rather than routed through insurance.

60

60-minute sessions

Private-pay sessions are typically scheduled for 60 minutes at a $200/hour rate, allowing more space for depth, integration, and careful pacing.

Private-pay clients receive a Good Faith Estimate reflecting the $200/hour rate as part of intake and may request one at any time.

90

Up to 90 minutes by request

Clients may request up to 90 minutes ahead of time. Extended time depends on clinical fit, clinician availability, and scheduling; sessions do not extend beyond 90 minutes.

Flexible frequency

Clients may request additional sessions as often as desired, subject to clinical appropriateness, scheduling availability, and treatment fit.

After each session

A written integration handout.

At the end of each private-pay session, clients receive a concise summary handout that organizes the primary themes, concepts, and clinical takeaways discussed during the session.

Session Integration Note

  • Primary concepts discussed
  • Important themes or patterns that emerged
  • Practices, reflections, or next-step considerations
  • Language to help carry the work between sessions

Between-session support

Check-ins with clear boundaries.

Check-ins are brief, bounded, and never a crisis service. They are used for continuity, clarification, or focused support between scheduled sessions when clinically appropriate.

Insurance-covered clients

Brief check-in phone calls of up to 25 minutes may be available when clinically appropriate, but they are usually billed separately at $20 when not covered by the client’s plan.

Established private-pay clients

Clients paying $200/hour who are in active, ongoing care and have been seen consistently on a weekly or every-other-week basis for at least 60 days may be eligible for one check-in phone call of up to 25 minutes per month at no additional charge, when clinically appropriate and scheduling permits. Eligibility depends on continued ongoing care and does not become a permanent or standalone monthly benefit.

Boundary note: Check-ins are not emergency coverage, crisis counseling, or 24/7 access. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, text HOME to 741741, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency department.

A different kind of container

For clients who want therapy to feel less constrained by insurance.

If you are considering private-pay care, the consultation is the best place to talk through whether this model fits the kind of support you are seeking.
